Why styling?

´´Your house needs to be your home.
Even if it is only for a short period!´´

Living abroad is a wonderful experience. Living in a new country. Meeting new people. Experience all
the specialties and excitements. But with all the excitement also brings about new challenges that one
may heve never experienced before.

One very common complaint that I hear is that upon arrival to The Netherlends with a trailer full of
furniture is ´´Where do I put all my things?´´
No doubt Dutch or european homes are smaller and layed out differently wich for many can prove to
be a huge endeavour to plan out how the furniture will fit.

Question:

´´Shortly we expect our third child. Therefore we have created a 'corner' in
our bedroom by moving our wardrobe. Because lack of space this seemed to be
the best solution ... But now ...

What could we do to make it really look like a nursery instead of a library?´´

(B. de Groot, Nijmegen)

The advice:

´´The idea to create a new corner to make a new little room is of course already
fantastic. I also see that you have created a little wardrobe out of the bookshelves.
It is always a good idea to look further than the origal function off the furniture.
Good for you!
What is very important in a nursery, especially if the room is not too large, it is to
work with large color areas. This prevents a very messy look. So go to work without
too many pictures or other small objects. If you want to do something with an
illustration, go for one big one, or keep everything in the same colour.
Also make sure that the "room" now created, is not higher than the cabinets. This
prevents an unfinished picture from the other side of the cabinets.
(No wallpaper up to the ceiling!)
Furthermore, it is also important to work with "width". This way you can prevent the
room to feel too narrow. So keep the place of the cradle where it is right now. A rug
along the side of the cradle, will also strengthen the width of the room.
To make a whole of it, we recommend to work with a "panelling" on the wall and
lower part of the bookcases. Think of a board with wallpaper or curtain in the same
colour as the wall of bookcases. This way you conceal the books beautifully, and at
the same time it forms a whole. Finish with a heaven for the cradle, and matrass for
the changing table, both in the same colour.
And did you also think about the lighting? In a nursery it is very important to have a
´night' lighting and one for everyday use. You would use the night light for feeding
or changing during the night. It is very soft so you both won't be that awake. Place it
on or near the changing table, and do it so that it will not shine on the face of
your baby. ´´
